After trying several things to try to lose weight, you might want to begin thinking about weight loss surgery. There are different types of weight loss surgery that you can discuss with your doctor so that you have the best experience possible and so that you see the best results during your weight loss journey. Before surgery, there are a few questions that you should ask so that you’re better prepared for the procedure and so that you know what to expect from the surgery weeks and months in the future.

Qualifications

Talk to your surgeon about qualifications for having weight loss surgery. You might need to reach a certain weight or lose a certain number of pounds before the procedure. You’ll usually discuss your BMI, or body mass index, in order to determine if you’re obese or morbidly obese so that you can work with your doctor to make a decision about the type of surgery that would work best for your lifestyle.

Losing Pounds

Ask your surgeon about how much weight you can expect to lose soon after surgery and one to two years out. You’ll want to know what kinds of foods you should eat and which ones you should avoid in order to lose weight in a healthy way after surgery. You also need to think about the personal goals that you have and why you want to lose weight, such as wanting to live longer or interact more with your family.

Child-Bearing

If you want to have weight loss surgery in order to try to have children in the future, then you need to talk to your partner, other family members, and your doctor. There could be other interventions that are possible before surgery.

Dieting

There will likely be a few changes that you need to make to your diet after surgery. Ask your doctor how soon you can begin eating solid foods after recovery and if there are specific foods that you should avoid. Along with dieting, you can usually maintain your weight loss with various exercises and even physical therapy sessions offered by your doctor.
