Orbera®

The Orbera® Intragastric Balloon System is a weight loss tool for adults who have a body mass index (BMI) ≥30 and ≤40 kg/m2. The weight loss program is for individuals who haven’t seen success with other weight loss programs, such as diet, exercise, and behavior modification.

Who is a Candidate For Orbera?

To receive Orbera®, patients must follow a 12-month program that begins with the placement of Orbera® and continues for an additional six months. The patient will need to consume a healthy diet and follow an exercise plan to experience significant weight loss. Not following the program may result in no weight loss.

Losing weight and keeping it off is a challenge, which is why each patient is supervised throughout this program by a team of physicians, physiologists, and nutritionists. Our medical team will support patients in their journey of making and maintaining positive changes in their eating and exercise habits.

Benefits of Orbera®

Unlike other weight loss solutions, Orbera® is non-surgical. The procedure involves inserting a gastric balloon orally through the patient’s esophagus and placing it directly into the stomach. The physician won’t need to make any incisions, stitches, or scars.

Orbera® isn’t permanent, though it offers lasting results for patients who complete the program and adopt a healthy lifestyle. After the first six months of the weight loss program, the stomach balloon is carefully removed and the patient continues the aftercare program.

What to Expect With Orbera®

The first phase of Orbera® involves placing the balloon into the patient’s stomach.

First, the physician will perform a diagnostic endoscopy to ensure it is safe to perform the procedure. The patient will be mildly sedated and the physician will insert a deflated gastric balloon through the patient’s esophagus and into the stomach. He or she will then use a syringe to fill the balloon with a sterile saline solution until it’s about the size of a grapefruit.

The procedure is done on an outpatient basis and will last about 20 minutes.

The second phase involves adjusting the patient’s daily habits. The Orbera® balloon will remain inside the patient’s stomach for six months, reducing the amount of food they can eat, and retraining their brain to anticipate the feeling of being full.

Open and constant communication with the patient’s support team will be crucial to maximizing the benefits of Orbera®. Patients will attend routine in-person sessions with their dietician, fitness trainer, psychologist, and physician.

The first six months typically bring the most drastic results, with patients losing 20 to 50 pounds — and sometimes even more.

After six months of eating healthy and exercising, the patient is ready to have their balloon removed. The removal procedure is very similar to the placement process, only taking 20 minutes.

The final phase of Orbera® involves continued support and coaching to ensure the patient continues following their personalized diet and exercise program. The patient will work closely with their specialist as they finish the weight loss treatment.
